We prefer to keep the puppy until they are 8 weeks old. Your puppy will come with its tail docked and dew claws removed. They will also have their first worming and first shots done. First shots are done at 6 weeks old. It is recommended by our vet that the puppy then receives three more sets of shots. One at 9 weeks, 12 weeks and 15 weeks. They will also need at least two more wormings. Once this is done, then you will do worming and shots once a year. As soon as you purchase your puppy you will want to call your vet and tell them that you have just purchased a new puppy and they have had their first set of shots and at that time you will make an appointment for them to see your new puppy.
Depending on where you live in the country or out of the country will depend on what your vet recommends about heart worm prevention. Here in Indiana we use heart worm prevention on our dogs once a month, year round. Some vets recommend only doing heartworm prevention during the summer months when misquitos are more prevalent.
You will want to feed your puppy a puppy food for large breed dogs until they are a year old. This is a must because the puppies need the protein content that is in this dogfood. It helps them to develop in the way that they need to for their fast growing bones. We use Purina ONE puppy food for large breed dogs and have had wonderful healthy puppies with this. We feed our dogs twice daily and we use the instructions on the back of the bag for the quantitiy to feed the puppy daily. We only use this as a guideline and adjust as needed.
All puppies will come with AKC registration papers for you to mail in to the American Kennel Club and register your puppy under your name.
If you have any concerns about your puppy, please do not hesitate to call you veterinarian, that is what they are there for. You are always welcome to call us to. We are not a veterinarian so we will not give medical advise, but we will certainly give you advice of what we know about our/your dog.
