Cropping your doberman's ears is a choice of the new owner. It does not have to be done.

Our vet recommends getting the ears cropped at 11-14 weeks. There are many vets that do it earlier. Our vet has learned that waiting a little longer, the puppy is more able to tolerate the anesthesia better and also there is much less time in taping them. Tapings can last a few weeks to several months. Having them done later (11-14 weeks) has definately proven to be the key for us, as we have never had more than 2 tapings at five days each.
The most important part of having your puppies ears cropped is this: Make sure you have the right vet do the crop. Cropping isn't as easy as just cutting the ear. Do your research and find an experienced vet. It does not have to be your local vet that will be doing your normal check ups.
There are 3 different cuts for cropping the ears. There is the military crop and this cut is a very very short cut. This cut is mostly used on pit bulls. The 2nd cut is the pet crop. This cut is what we use and it is also the cut on the two pictures to the left. The third cut is the show crop. This cut is a very long tall cut and it takes a bit more effort to get this cut to stand and it is used in dobermans that are being showed.
